Walk into any hardware store and you'll find dozens of grass seed bags — and most of them are generic blends designed for nobody in particular. At Heintz Hydro Seeding, we custom-blend our seed mixes specifically for Northwest Ohio's soil types, climate, and growing conditions. Here's what you need to know.
NW Ohio is Cool-Season Grass Country
Northwest Ohio sits in the "transition zone" but leans heavily toward cool-season grasses. Our winters are cold enough to go dormant and our summers are warm enough to stress some varieties. The best grasses for this region are:
Tall Fescue
Our most-used grass for residential lawns. Deep roots make it drought tolerant once established, it handles Ohio's clay soils well, and it stays green longer into fall and winter than other varieties. Excellent for sun and partial shade.
Kentucky Bluegrass
The classic dense, dark-green lawn grass. Spreads by rhizomes to fill in bare spots over time. Requires more water than fescue and prefers full sun. Often blended with fescue for a beautiful, durable lawn.
Perennial Ryegrass
Fast-germinating (3–5 days!) and fine-textured. We use this in blends to provide quick coverage while slower varieties establish. Not the best standalone grass but excellent as part of a mix.
A blend of 60% Tall Fescue, 25% Kentucky Bluegrass, and 15% Perennial Ryegrass. This combination gives you fast germination, deep roots, drought tolerance, and a beautiful dense texture.

What About Sun vs. Shade?
This is critical. We assess your lawn's sun exposure during our free estimate and adjust the seed blend accordingly. A shady backyard under tree canopy needs a completely different mix than a sunny front lawn — and using the wrong seed is one of the top reasons lawns fail.
